KAIT DUNTON is a Los Angeles based composer & pianist who eagerly defies genre boundaries with her unconventional approach to composition and to the piano trio. Her electro-acoustic group - trioKAIT - brings a fresh perspective to the classic jazz piano trio, shuffling wide-ranging influences and Kait’s innovative compositions into a refreshingly modern take on instrumental music that is as uncategorizable as it is infectious. Her third album, trioKAIT, released in July 2015 as the most added new jazz album on the JazzWeek charts and remained in the top-twenty for weeks. In October, Downbeat Magazine ran a Player’s Piece on Kait and her trio, and in December, The Huffington Post included trioKAIT in their list of “The Best Jazz for 2015”. trioKAIT continues to tour around the U.S. to promote the album and will return to Europe in the Fall.
Kait has been recognized on Jazz.com as one of “10 Future Female Jazz Stars” and described by Don Heckman as “an extraordinary talent on the rise” with “impressive compositional skills”. Her first album, Real & Imagined, has garnered high praise for Dunton’s writing and playing: “[Kait] throws cold water on any notion that the piano/bass/drums format is an exhausted one. It’s very much alive and well, and here is all the proof you need…” (Something Else! Reviews). In 2012, Kait released a second album of original compositions, Mountain Suite, featuring master interpreters Peter Erskine on drums, Bob Mintzer on tenor sax, John Daversa on trumpet and Darek Oles on bass. The Examiner calls Mountain Suite “…astunning showcase of a jazz newcomer holding her own with legends”.
In addition to her focus on composition, Kait is also an active performer around Los Angeles and elsewhere, playing her original music in a variety of settings. For the past two summers and again this year in March, she has toured her original music in Germany with trioKAIT. Recently, the trio presented an exciting preview of the new album atthe USC Women’s Conference in March. Kait holds a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she studied under pianist Alan Pasqua and composer Vince Mendoza. Kait now focuses full time on her career as a composer and pianist.
"Pianist/composer Dunton's first album, Real & Imagined, is the work of an extraordinary talent on the rise... its gripping compositions and inherently swinging rhythms offer a brilliant re-imagining of the elemental aspects of the piano jazz trio," - Don Heckman, Playboy Jazz Festival Publication.
