The Red Coats

Our team of ‘Red Coat” Volunteer Ushers is an integral part of the Solvang Festival Theater (SFT). We appreciate the generous gifts of time and talent that our Red Coats give us.

We depend upon the courtesy and professionalism of our ushers from the moment the patrons enter the lobby until the last guest has left the theater. With their dedicated service we continue to sustain an environment in which our players and our audience can best give and receive the magic that is Solvang Festival Theater.

SFT Volunteer Card

In appreciation for their volunteer service as an usher at Solvang Festival Theater, volunteers receive the benefit of earning credits toward tickets to PCPA performances at the Marian, Severson, or Solvang Festival Theater. Tickets are subject to availability and are not valid for Saturday evening performances in Solvang and Sunday matinees in Santa Maria. Benefit performances, special events and Allan Hancock dances are not included.

2017 Letter to Applicants:

We thank you for your interest in being a Red Coat Usher at the Solvang Festival Theater. You are the first person the patrons see when they enter our beautiful theater and a helpful friendly face makes the experience even better. Your time and efforts don’t go unnoticed. Last year volunteers donated over 5000 hours!

As a thank you for your time the Theaterfest Board is having a Red Coats Picnic on Wednesday, May 24th from 5–7:00pm. We hope that you and your family are able to attend. Please RSVP on the attached sign-up sheet and return it to us by May 1st.

PCPA is staging four wonderful productions this season: Disney's Beauty And The Beast, Lend Me A Tenor The Musical, Disney's Newsies The Musical and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. In addition there are other events where volunteers are needed. Please sign up for the shows/events you would like to volunteer for on the attached sheet. We ask that you make a copy as the House Managers do not call to confirm. We understand that emergencies arise and you may find that you’re not able to volunteer as you scheduled. Please call Jenny or Brittany (#s will be given to volunteers) as soon as you know you can’t meet your commitment, or you can call the office at 686-1789 and leave a message. This will give the House Managers time to find a replacement for you so that the evening runs smoothly and they are not short-handed. It’s not acceptable to just not show up.

All PCPA Shows start at 8:00pm but we ask that you arrive no later than 6:30pm so that the House Managers can discuss the show, intermission details and any other specifics with you that will make each evening a pleasant experience for everyone involved. Also at this time they will assign ushers to the various positions. Please indicate on the sign-up sheet if you have a preference or limitation. They will do their best to accommodate your requests.

We have changed the age range for Junior Ushers. Junior Ushers should be at least 13 years of age or starting the 7th grade in the fall of 2017 and be mature enough to handle the job. Junior ushers 15–18 years old may come on their own with written parental permission.

The dress code for all ushers and of all ages is black pants (or skirt) and a white shirt with a red vest, jacket or sweater. Please respect this request. Red jackets are available if you do not have one you prefer to wear. We understand we are an outdoor venue and it can get cold in the evenings. Please choose outerwear that is appropriate.

The most important thing to bring to the theater is a positive attitude and a smile for the theater patrons. We want the evening to be a pleasant experience for everyone involved. If this is your first time volunteering as a Red Coat please let us know so that we may forward to you a Red Coats manual. You can always read it on-line or download a copy of the manual from our website.

Thank you again for your willingness to serve the community and the Solvang Festival Theater as a volunteer usher. We couldn’t do it without you.

Sincerely,

Pam Pilcher, Executive Director
Solvang Theaterfest

Note to concert/special event volunteers: We alway have an over-abundance of regular and new volunteers requesting to usher for our concerts. All Red Coats will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Some volunteers may be asked to work during the concert and after parties. “Ticket takers” may need to train prior to the event due to new ticketing equipment and system set-up. All Red Coat volunteers for SFT concerts where alcohol is served must be 18 years of age or older.
